TWO ISSUES PREDICTED TO DOMINATE PDIP CONGRESS
Jakarta, March 20 (ANTARA) - A parliament member from the Indonesia Democratic Party-Sruggle (PDIP), Syukur Nababan, said he predicted two issues would dominate the party's national congress in Bali on April 5-9.
"The two issues are PDIP's political stance and the creation of party vice chairmanship," he said here on Saturday.
He said the issue of PDIP's political stance was likely to become a hot topic of discussions because some functionaires had started a discourse on the need for the party to coalesce with the government's party.
He said however that it would all depend on the response of the congress participants.
Based on the decision of the last congress, he said, PDIP had remained outside the coalition of parties supporting the government and taken a critical stance towards the government.
"This has been the official stance of the party. But it is possible it will become a topic of discussion in the congress in Bali," he said.
Another issue likely to be hotly debated was the position of vice chairperson which was not found in the party's organizational structure and not mentioned in its internal rules.
He said the issue was likely to emerge because there might be persons who would call for changing the rules.
"If the participants agree to change the rules to add a vice chairperson, the party's structure will be stronger," he said.
He said if the proposal was approved by the congress, he would suggest a young figure aged around 40 who had capability and good political vision to hold the post.
A party vice chairmanship was expected to serve as a stepping stone for capable PDIP figures to assume the party's top leadership in the future.
He said anyone meeting the requirements could fill the post but he himself would prefer Puan Maharani, Megawati's daughter, for it.
"I choose her not because she is Megawati's daughter but because of her capability and political vision," he said.***
