KARAWANG FLOODS AFFECT SEVEN SUBDISTRICTS



Karawang, W Java, March 21 (ANTARA) - Floods triggered by the overflowing Citarum river in the past four days have inundated more than 5,000 homes in Karawang district, West Java.

Data from the Karawang district social service show the floods affected 21 villages in seven subdistricts by Sunday. The seven subdistricts are Karawang Barat, Karawang Timur, Telukjambe Timur, Telukjambe Barat, Ciampel, Batujaya, and Pakisjaya.

"Among the flood-stricken subdistricts, Telukjambi Timur and Karawang Barat are hit the hardest by the floods," spokesman for the district social service Suhendra said.

In Telukjambe Timur subdistrict alone, more than 3,500 houses at seven villages were flooded. The floods inundated about 1,000 houses at five villages in Karawang Barat subdistrict, he said.

In the worst-hit areas the water level reached the height of up to 2.5 meters, an ANTARA journalist observed.
