MALAYSIA CONFIDENT OF REDUCING CARBON EMISSION BY 40 PERCENT
KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 (Bernama) -- Natural Resources and Environment
Minister Douglas Unggah Embas Monday told the House of Representatives that
Carbon dioxide emission can be reduced to 40 percent by 2020.
Douglas Unggah said the government was confident of achieving the target
since an initial strategy to draft a roadmap, comprising three main programmes -
conserve energy, renewal energy and waste management - had already started.
"For the programme, efforts to use equipment wisely and the aspect of
designing buildings that use less energy would be implemented.
"The government will also phase out incandescent lights or commonly known as
'round bulbs' to conserve the use of electricity more effectively and by 2014
will stop the use and import of such bulbs, thus reducing carbon emission by 9
million tonnes," said Douglas Unggah when answering a question by Khairy
Jamaluddin, a Member of Parliament (MP) in House of Representatives Monday.
Khairy had wanted to know the steps taken by the government to reduce carbon
emission by 40 percent as agreed during the United Nations Climate Change
Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark in December.
