World Water Day message: Bin Fahd calls on every household to avoid extravagance in the use of water
Abu Dhabi, March 22, 2010 (WAM)- Minister of Environment and Water HE Dr. Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahd said that UAE has always been keen to adopt strategies for sustainable development of water resources with the creation of laboratories equipped with the latest modern techniques to examine and assess the quality of water used for various needs.
In a message given on the eve of the World Water Day that falls on 22nd of March every year, Bin Fahd attributed UAE's successful efforts in this regard to the directives of President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
As part of achieving sustainable development of water resources, the ministry has completed the building of 114 dams and barriers at the Wadis across the country with a total storage capacity 118 million cubic meters of water, the minister said.
Maintenance of springs and streams, which pump an estimated 2.19 MCM of water per year are also progressing as planned with an aim of increasing the capacity of feeding aquifers with fresh water. The country has also built several desalination plants to provide over 1.3billion cubic metres of clean water per year to meet various needs of the population, said the minister.
This is in addition to an estimated annual production of 400 million cubic meters of irrigation water through treatment techniques. The country, in collaboration with the International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture, is also actively pursuing agricultural methods using saline water as part of its overall strategy of sustainability, added Bin Fahd.
The theme of this year's World Water Day, "Clean Water for a Healthy World", is set to remind the world population of the importance of safeguarding water quality and purification in order to achieve prosperity for all.
Protection of water quality and the rationalisation of consumption is not only the responsibility of the country and its various bodies, but also is the moral obligation and duty of every individual in the society, Bin Fahd stressed.
He called on every family to educate their children on the importance of non-pollution of water and correct the misconceptions that cause waste and extravagance in this vital element created by God.
