INDONESIAN MARINE TEAM TO LEAVE FOR RUSSIA TO INSPECT BMP-3Fs
Jakarta, March 23 (ANTARA) - A technical team of the Indonesian marine corps is scheduled to leave for Russia late April to inspect the finishing touch of BMP-3F amphibious tanks ordered under a contract signed in August 2008.
The team was supposed to depart for Russia this month but because there was still a routine exercise they postponed the visit until late April, Commander of the Indonesian Marine Corps Maj. Gen. M.Alfan Baharudin said on Tuesday.
"The team will inspect the finishing touch of the BMP-3F amphibious tanks which are expected to arrive in Indonesia in August this year," he said.
He said 10 of the 17 amphibious tanks would be operated by the Infantry Brigade 1 in Surabaya and seven by the Infantry Brigade 2 in Jakarta.
Earlier, South Korea granted 10 US-made amphibious tanks of landing vehicle track-7A1 type to the Indonesian marine corps. The grant was the result of negotiations between the two countries started in 2007.
The LVT-7A1 tanks have the same class as PT 76 and BTR 60 amphibious tanks currently owned by Indonesia. The LVT-7A1 amphibious tanks are the modification of LVT amphibious tanks dubbed Alligator.
