MORE THAN 15,000 FLOOD VICTIMS SEEK SAFER PLACES IN KARAWANG, W JAVA
Karawang, W Java, Mar 23 (ANTARA) - More than 15,000 flood victims in Karawang regency, West Java, have moved to safer locations in the past few days.
According to data of the Karawang social service, most of the flood victims came from Telukjambe Timur subdistrict totaling 7,400, and the number of flood victims in Karawang Barat subdistrict reached 3,211, all have sought safer locations.
The flood victims from Karawang Barat subdistrict have moved to several places including the DPC office building in Karawang, several school buildings in Karawang, police living quarters, religious institutions, mosques and a kindergarten.
Those from Telukjambe Timur subdistrict sought refuge at mosques, village administration office building, residential areas, and at the office building of the village head.
In the meantime, many other flood victims also sought refuge under tents, at shopping centers, and the home of relatives.
Head of the Karawang social service Banuara Nadeak said he along with private businesses and the military (TNI) opened seven public kitchens in Telukjambe Timur and Karawang Barat subdistricts.
The floods were caused by the overflowing of Citarum river since Thursday (Mar 18), inundating more than 8,000 houses occupied by 32,119 people in seven subdistricts in Karawang.
The seven subdistricts currently still flooded are Karawang Barat, Karawang Timur, Telukjambe Timur, Telukjambe Barat, Ciampel, Batujaya and Pakisjaya.
