Mamuju, Mar 23 (ANTARA) - Singaporean investors were set to funding the building of a dam in Tommo subdistrict some 100 kilometers from Mamuju, capital of West Sulawesi province.
The remarks were made by head of the West Sulawesi agriculture and cattle breeding agency Muhammad Abduh here on Tuesday.
He said the dam will irrigate 10,000 hectares of farmland in Mamuju regency, and so far had cost Rp47 billion from the State Budget, but the project has yet to be completed due to lack of funds.
Therefore, he said, the West Sulawesi administration is expecting the arrival of Singaporean investors who have expressed willingness to funding the Tommo dam project.
He said if the Tommo dam is built by the government by way of investors the farmland in Mamuju regency whose production has been less than those of other areas like Polman regency, the rice production center in West Sulawesi, the production of the farmland in Mamuju will also increase significantly.
He said that with the building of the Tommo dam, the farmland in the area which in the past did not have any irrigation system, will have this system to irrigate 10,000 hectares of farmland.
"Besides, the productivity of the farmland will increase from five tons per year to nine tons per annum, boosting agricultural production in West Sulawesi currently reaching only 375,000 tons per year," he said.
