STRATEGIC BRAND CREATIONS CRUCIAL FOR MSIAN COMPANIES TO GO GLOBAL
KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Bernama) -- Strategic brand creations will be more
crucial for Malaysian companies to be players in the global market as the
nation moves into the next phase of development and further integrate with the
global economy, says Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Muhkriz
Mahathir.
He said the government's direction would focus on building Malaysian brands
into global as it translates into greater competitiveness for Malaysian products
and services.
"The marketability of Malaysian products and services will be immensely
enhanced by the ability of companies to meet international standards and the
requirements of the target market.
"We still have a long way to go in branding as there are more than 600,000
businesses registered in the country and only 58,777 trademarks were registered
by the Malaysian companies as at January 31, this year.
"Yet there are only a few Malaysian brands that we can consider
international and hardly any is global," he said in his speech at the Putra
Brands Award here Wednesday night.
On another note, Mukhriz said Malaysian companies were encouraged to migrate
from original equipment manufacturing (OEM) to own brand manufacturing (OBM) in
order for them to thrive in the global market.
He added companies are also encouraged to reinforce efforts by the
government to brand Malaysia by aligning their corporate, product and service
positioning with that of the country.
The Putra Brands Award, aimed at recognising public listed companies and
local brands as well as small and medium entrepreneurs through consumer
preferences has 21 different categories.
Air Asia, Petronas, Astro, Maxi and Maybank were among the prominent
Malaysian Gold award winners at the event.
