NGOs URGE PDIP TO SPEARHEAD HOUSE OPINION STATEMENT ON CENTURY

Jakarta, Mar 25 (ANTARA) - A number of non-governmental organizations )NGOs) have urged the Indonesian Democracy Party-Struggle (PDIP) faction in the House of Representatives (DPR) to spearhead a parliamentary statement of opinion on the Bank Century bailout issue.
The House needed to state its opinion as a follow-up to its conclusions and recommendations on the bank bailout scandal adopted at its plenary session not long ago, the NGOs spokesman, Barry Furqan, said here Thursday.

Barry, a director of the Indonesian Forum on the Environment (Walhi), was speaking on behalf of an alliance of several NGOs called the People's Opposition Front (FOR) at a meeting with members of the House's PDIP faction at the parliament building.

He said FOR was calling on the PDIP and other factions in the House that had chosen Option C at the House plenary session not long ago to make the House issue a formal opinion on the Bank Century issue soon.

Option C was a statement in which the Bank Century bailout was described as a process full of irregularities and unlawful acts. It also recommended the suspension of state officials responsible for the scandal.

Seven of the House's nine party factions, including the PDIP faction, voted for Option C so that the option became the House's official stance on the issue.

But President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono later defended the monetary authority's decision to bail out the failed Bank Century, saying the measure had prevented a catastrophic domestic banking crisis. He also even credited Finance Minister Sri Mulyani and former Bank Indonesia governor Boediono for saving the national economy by their bailout policy.
"The House needs to express its opinion to prevent a situation where two state institutions (the legislature and the government) ignore or harass each other," Barry said.

He said the House had arrived at its official stance on the Bank Century issue in a constitutional and transparent manner and therefore, the government's attitude in politically ignoring the House's stance was a good reason for the legislature to exercise its right to express its opinion.

Besides, he said, by issuing its onion, the House could also put an end to the debate between itself and the government on what the truth was in the Bank Century case.
