HUNDREDS OF PADANG RESIDENTS EVACUATE DUE TO FLOODS

Padang, Indonesia, March 26 (ANTARA) - Hundreds of Padang residents in West Sumatra, had to move to safer places to avoid floods.

Scores of houses in the West Sumatra capital city were inundated, forcing hundreds of their occupants to evacuate to higher grounds.

Heavy rainfall in Padang since 5 pm local time caused many houses in Parak Buruk, Koto Tangah subdistrict to become inundated and the flood waters reached more than 1 meters deep.

A SAR team has arrived in the area setting up emergency tents for the flood victims.

The floods also hit Arai Pinang, Lubuk Begalung subdistrict, where scores of houses became inundated in waters 1.5 meters deep.

Lubuk Begalung police chief Ajunct Commissioner Gatot Istanto said in Padang the floods caused the inundation of many of houses in Arai Pinang, Lubuk Begalung subdistrict, Padang, with the flood waters more than 1 meter deep, but there were no fatalities.***
