Municipality of Abu Dhabi City approves landscaping layouts of 4 major intersections
Abu Dhabi, Mar 30, 2010 (WAM)- The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has sanctioned the final layouts of landscaping '&' irrigation works of four major intersections extending from Abu Dhabi city to Al Taweelah on Abu Dhabi - Dubai Road. Works will commence by the mid of this year and last for a year and a half in the project, which is part of the Municipality's efforts to improve the appearance of the city and enhance the aesthetics view of public areas to tune them with the overall progress and development witnessed by the Emirate.
Engineer Abdullah Al Shamsi, Acting Executive Director of Municipal Infrastructure and Assets Sector, said, "The project is part of a series of landscaping projects targeting many public facilities, and the Municipality has sanctioned the final designs of the project, which includes landscaping and irrigation of major intersections between Al bahya and Al Taweelah, namely: intersection (1) Bahya, intersection (2) Shahama 2, intersection (3) Ajban, and intersection (4) Taweela. Tenders will soon be invited for the project to attract specialised companies of vast experience in this field such that implementation will commence in the forthcoming months, and to be completed within a period not more than 540 days".
"Project works consist of three main phases; light landscaping, dense landscaping and irrigation works. Each intersection was assigned a specific colour so that it is easily memorised and standout from other intersections. The ruby-red colour was chosen for the 1st intersection, orange for the 2nd intersection, dark pink for the 3rd intersection and green for the 4th intersection," added Abdullah.
The project also includes landscaping, light excavation and landfill works that cover approx 140 thousand cubic meters, in addition to removing about 176 trees, including the relocation of 260 palm trees, and planting about 400 extra palm trees and 172 trees of various types, as well as cultivating about 66 thousand square meters of green vegetation, flowers and ornamental trees.
On the other hand, dense landscaping works include spreading out of compact gravel mats on roadsides, with 1 meter wide, covering a total area of about 16 thousand square meters to enrich the beautiful setting taking advantage of the constructional and colour overlaps. They also cover reducing irrigation water used, facilitating maintenance works, as well as edging works using polyethylene material, with about 3100 linear meter.
Irrigation works, which are the third part in the project, include extending connecting pipelines from the current processed wastewater mains to feed the ground tank and the pumping station proposed for each intersection, in addition to using about 14 kilometres of high-density polyethylene pipes for the mains that feed intersections, besides nearly 27.5 kilometres of subsidiary pipelines.
The project works also include construction of about 70 valve rooms along with 125 valves for drip irrigation, in addition to 4 irrigation automated control units and other irrigation equipment and pipes. Old irrigation systems above the ground will be removed from the third and fourth intersections.
Al Shamsi pointed out that the project is considered one of the important cosmetic projects being implemented as it is located at one of the main entry points leading to and from the capital. The project took account of the future development plans of Abu Dhabi Island when laying out the designs; especially intersections are considered as a link between development projects and the city along the road from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, and the heavy traffic on this road.
