India helps irrigation development in Laos

VIENTIANE,MACH 31(KPL)- The Department of Irrigation, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos, and the Wapcos Limited inked here a memorandum of understanding on a USD 30 million project Technical Assistance in the Field of Irrigation Development and Management in the Lao PDR.
According to the document signed by Director General of the Department of Irrigation, Mr. Khamphad Sourinphoumy, and his Wapcos Limited General Manager Mr. B.V. Kulkarni, Wapcos has agreed to complete the prefeasibility studies for the Irrigation by Gravity Projects and the Rehabilitation and Modernisation of Pumping Projects, which will be implemented with the loan from the Indian government.
Both sides have also agreed to enter into a separate agreement for the prefeasibility study of irrigation systems in Laos at an estimated cost of USD 500,000 as provisional amount.
“The loan from the government of the Republic of India amounting to US$ 30 million is considered very important for investment in the irrigation development and management in our country for the production of food and commodity from irrigated agriculture areas,” said Mr. Khamphad Sourinphoumy.
