M'SIA HAS EXPERTISE TO RESOLVE INTERNAL ISSUES WITHOUT OUTSIDE MEDDLING
KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has the expertise to manage and
resolve its internal problems without any foreign interference, parliament was
told Thursday.
Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay said Malaysia upheld a
foreign relations policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other
countries and hoped that other countries would also not interfere in its
internal affairs.
"But of late, there had been countries which tried to interfere in
Malaysia's administration of justice and other matters.
"We had asked these countries not to meddle in our internal affairs as we
have the expertise to manage them in whatever situation.
"For instance, when 50 Australian lawmakers pressured Malaysia to drop a
case in our court, the government strongly objected to the interference.
Australia also stated that it was a stand made by individuals and not the
country," he said in reply to Bung Moktar Radin, a Member of Parliament (MP)
Meanwhile, Kohilan hit out at Mahfuz Omar, another MP as being
short on ideas for repeatedly raising the same question -- on the government's
appointment of Apco Worldwide as image consultant, which is also looking after
Israel's interests.
The PAS vice-president had questioned whether appointing the public affairs
and strategic communications firm would affect Malaysia's image in the eyes of
other countries, especially OIC (Organisation of the Islamic Conference)
countries), as Malaysia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.
The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, commonly known as PAS, is an Islamist
political party in Malaysia.
Earlier, Kohilan said Malaysia's foreign relations policy was based on the
principle of forging good, friendly relations and close cooperation with all
countries which had diplomatic relations with it.
"The main objective is to protect, defend and promote our country's
geo-political interests at the international arena.
"In implementing this policy, Malaysia adopts the approach of proactive
diplomacy which emphasises the principle of respecting the sovereignty of other
countries and non-interference in their internal affairs, as well as the
principle of 'prosper thy neighbour' for shared prosperity."
To date, he said, Malaysia had established bilateral diplomatic relations
with 128 countries.
