AFTER A YEAR AS M'SIAN PM, NAJIB PLEDGES TO CONTINUE WORKING HARD FOR THE PEOPLE
HULU SELANGOR (Malaysia), April 3 (Bernama) -- On the first anniversary
Saturday of his administration, Prime Minister Najib Razak pledged to continue
to work hard and uphold the people's trust so that the nation continued to
achieve progress.
Speaking at the launch of the Kelana Ehsan Foundation (YKE) in Felda Sungai
Tengi here, he said the past one year had not been easy administrating the
country and helming a government because he shouldered a heavy task demanded of
him by the people.
"Malaysia is a country not easy to administer. I came to realise this the
most after I was entrusted to be the head of government.
"I most understand and am able to appreciate that it is not easy to lead a
government such as Malaysia's.
"Over the past one year of shouldering this heavy responsibility, I have
been able to feel how heavy the burden is that I have on my shoulders," he said.
He said that as the head of government he realised that it was necessary to
be cautious in making decisions, to ensure that the decisions benefit the
people.
"I did not feel so strongly about this when I was just a minister, and not
even when I became the deputy (prime minister) ... I could lean on the prime
minister.
"But when I became the prime minister, I realised and felt that any decision
of mine was related to my responsibility to make the right decision which can
benefit the people," he said.
Besides, he said, he had to sacrifice time with the family because of his
duties and responsibilities.
"My days have become longer and my nights, shorter. My wife complains that I
listen to the problems of others and not hers. This is the convention when you
are the leader of a country. I have come to accept all these because this is the
trust the people have placed in you," he said.
When asked about the Merdeka Centre survey which reported that 68 per cent
of Malaysians were satisfied with his performance as the prime minister, Najib
just smiled.
"I do not know the gauge for this, but I saw happy faces today when I went
around shaking hands this morning. I was able to detect positive vibes when
shaking hands," he said to applause.
Najib said he was grateful that during his one year in office many changes
had been introduced for the benefit of the people.
"We have seen some of the changes. Some changes will take time to manifest.
It's like planting a sapling. It will not fruit on the same day that we plant
it. It will take time to bear fruit. But, I am keeping an eye on this," he said.
Najib said he would ensure implementation of all the pledges made by the
Barisan Nasional (National Front - BN) to the people because the party's
struggle is to help the people and champion their interests.
He criticised the opposition political parties for making pledges but not
fulfilling them, and added that the BN had much experience helming the country.
