KHALED WANTS TERTIARY STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE SOFT SKILLS
PEKAN (Malaysia), April 3 (Bernama) -- Public and private institutions of
higher learning have been asked to diversify their co-curricular activities to
enable students to acquire soft skills to boost their job marketability.
Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said soft skills included
such abilities as effective communication, creativity, innovation, analytical
thinking, diplomacy, flexibility, leadership and team building to face
challenges in the new millennium.
He said the public and private service sectors needed people of integrity
and quality to face up to challenges under the 1Malaysia concept and in
implementing the New Economic Model (NEM).
"How are they going to establish a good relationship with the public or
boost the capacity of their companies if they do not have effective
communication skills, have difficulty coming up with creative ideas and do not
have leadership capabilities?" he told reporters after officiating at the
1Malaysia Orienteering event of the ministry and Universiti Teknologi Mara
(UiTM), here.
He said academic excellence alone was not enough to help the government
continue with its development agenda and spur the national economy to enable the
country become a high-income nation.
Mohamed Khaled also said that Prime Minister Najib Razak had placed great
emphasis on the higher education of the people, making it a critical factor in
the national development agenda.
He said the institutions of higher learning should progress in tandem with
the government objective of making Malaysia a developed nation through the
creation of excellent human capital.
"All plans can fail if the higher education sector does not play the role
desired of it by the government," he said.
A total of 1,096 students from 50 public and private tertiary institutions
participated in the three-day orienteering challenge from yesterday, which
involved getting from one place to another guided by a map and compass.
The event, with a record number of participants, will be included in the
Malaysia Book of Records. The previous record was 634 participants.
