BUSINESS, PASSION DRIVE MAXIS TO PARTICIPATE IN LOTUS RACING
SEPANG (Malaysia), April 3 (Bernama) -- It was all about business and
passion that drive commmunications service provider Maxis Bhd, to participate as
an official sponsor of Lotus Racing.
There was no element of political interference in its decision, Maxis Chief
Operating Officer Jean-Pascal Van Overbeke told reporters during a media
luncheon at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC).
Malaysian companies should help each other and more so when it involves the
nation's pride, he added.
He said the company had received very positive response towards its
involvement in Formula One and was sure that it would bring benefits to Maxis as
well as its customers.
Formula One regularly attracts more than 400 million to 600 million
television fans around the world, making it the third largest viewed global
sports event after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Maxis is Malaysia's leading communications service provider with over 12.3
million mobile subscriptions as at end of 2009.
"We are very committed not only in sponsoring the deal but also in the
aspect of technology exchange, engineering, research and development, and all,"
Van Overbeke said.
Since 2009, Maxis has been the official provider for SIC of a speed,
reliability, large bandwidth and real-time connectivity which enables smooth
communication between members of race teams.
Maxis Vice-President and Head of Enterprise & Carrier Business Division
Fitri Abdullah said demand for connectivity from media groups as well as the
racing teams was overwhelming.
"Last year, we began fiberising the Sepang circuit. This year, we sign a
five-year contract as the main wirer," he said. Sepang was also the first
Formula One circuit to use metro internet, he added.
As for Maxis customers, Maxis Head of Product Development & Infotainment
Services T. Kugan said, they would receive immediate access to the latest Lotus
Racing news and information and the team's performance on their mobile devices
and computers.
They can experience this anytime, anywhere through SMS/MMS alerts, broadband
and at Maxis' dedicated Malaysian GP Wap Portal.
