MINISTER: BROADBAND FOR 138 INFORMATION OFFICES NATIONWIDE

JEMPOL (Malaysia), April 7 (Bernama) -- Broadband facilities will be installed at 138 information offices nationwide to attract people to visit them, Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim said.

"With these facilities available, people will become more interested in
visiting them and this augurs well for our information initiative, especially
among the younger generation," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after launching a broadband service run by
REDtone
International Bhd at Lui Barat Secondary School near here.

Rais said unlike in the past, people nowadays seldom visited information
offices as they had other sources of information such as newspapers and
magazines.

He hoped that with the broadband facilities, people in districts would
again
come to information offices to obtain information.

He said the ministry was currently arranging the deployment of the
service
including in terms of scheduling.

"We are also in the process of determining the secondary schools which will
be provided with computers. We have set aside a RM1 billion allocation to
improve broadband penetration nationwide," he said.

The ministry expects to complete distribution of computers to schools by end
of the year.

"With this initiative, we can expect the broadband penetration to surpass
the target of 50 per cent compared to 34 per cent at the moment. We are
confident we can achieve the remaining 16 per cent," he said.

He also called on state governments to reconsider their requirements with
regard to the setting up of broadband towers as "there are state governments
imposing too high a fee and all sorts of conditions".

"I've also asked, through the Housing and Local Government Ministry, that a
by-law be formulated by local governments to facilitate the setting up of
broadband facilities very much like the by-laws for other infrastructures such
as road and electricity.

"It's the people's right to have access to broadband and no state government
should impose out of ordinary charges or conditions," he said.
