MONGOLIA, PORTUGAL FOSTER RELATIONSHIP
Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ President Tsakhia Elbegdorj received Wednesday a Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Portugal Luis Filipe Marques Amado.
At the meeting, Mr Ebegdorj expressed his thanks to Mr Amado for making first top level visit to Mongolia from Portugal and talked about feasibilities of accelerating the bilateral relations and cooperation bringing them into new stage.
Mr. Amado expressed his satisfaction with that Mongolia is successfully realizing democratic society transition in the scope of complex political and economic spheres. "For one of the first countries to abolish death penalty, Portugal is grateful for Mongolian President's action to have a moratorium on execution of the capital punishment. We will fully support and render assistance in completely abolishing death penalty from legal system in Mongolia," he said.
Mongolia established the diplomatic relations with Portugal in 1974, and Mr Amado is the first top ranking guest visiting Mongolia.
A draft agreement on cooperation in education, cultural, scientific, technological, higher education, youth, sport and press, media sectors was endorsed between Mongolia and Portugal in Lisbon in January 2009.
