MSIA NEEDS TO LOOK AT GREEN TECH AS FUTURE CONTRIBUTOR TO ECONOMY

KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia needs to look at the potential
of developing green technology as a future contributor to the country's economy,
Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Mukhriz Mahathir
said Thursday.

He said in doing so, the country would also need to address legislation
issues in order for the renewable energy industry to be able to gain revenue and
contribute to the country.

For now, the green technology only plays a minimal part in Malaysia's
economy compared to other countries like Germany and Korea, he told reporters on
the sideline of the Korea-Malaysia Business Forum here.

In the future, green technology would play an important role in any country,
and those that can fully utilise it would be ensured of a continued source of
economic growth.

On another note, Mukhriz said Malaysia was keen to receive green
technologies from Korea and would be stepping up on bilateral cooperation
between both countries.

He said this was also due to Malaysia's commitment to reduce carbon dioxide
emission up to 40 per cent by 2020.
