UNDP, MALAYSIA SIGN NEW CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT
KUALA LUMPUR, April 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) sealed the establishment of a new capacity building
support project Friday that will enhance the country's role in peacekeeping
training.
The project, dubbed "Capacity Building Support for Malaysia's Role in
Multidimensional Peacekeeping Training", was signed at the Malaysian
Peacekeeping Training Centre in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.
Negeri Sembilan is one of the 13 states that constitutes the Federation of
Malaysia. It is located on the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, just south
of Kuala Lumpur.
The project paves the way for the centre to not only train peacekeepers from
Malaysia but also from other Asian countries and Africa.
Economic Planning Unit director-general Noriyah Ahmad signed on behalf
of the Malaysian government while UNDP Resident Representative for Malaysia,
Kamal Malhotra, for the UNDP.
Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia, Masahiko Horie, witnessed the ceremony.
In a statement, the Japanese Embassy said its government contributed US$1
million (RM3.40 million), through the UNDP-Japan Partnership Fund, to the
project.
According to the statement, the first-of-its-kind multi-dimensional
peacekeeping training centre in the region would be managed by both the UNDP and
Malaysia's Defence Ministry.
The project would also emphasise on the multi-dimensional aspects of
peacekeeping, in particular the civil-military coordination as well as
protection of children and women in times of armed conflicts.
The Japanese government has extended about RM10 million to non-governmental
organisations and local governments in Malaysia under its grant assistance for
grassroots human security projects since 1989.
