Pak wants Shoaib's passport to be returned to him
SHOAIB-PASSPORT
Rezaul H Laskar
Islamabad, Apr 11 (PTI) Interior Minister Rehman Malik
Sunday asked Pakistan's High Commissioner to India Shahid
Malik to request authorities there to return cricketer Shoaib
Malik's passport, which was seized after an Indian woman
claiming to be his wife filed a police complaint against him.
Malik told the media that he had read in a newspaper
on Sunday morning that Shoaib's passport had still not been
released by Indian authorities.
"I have taken serious notice of this and I asked our
High Commissioner to India Shahid Malik to convey my message
to (Home Minister) P Chidambaram (to release the passport),"
he said.
He said he did not think that the release of Shoaib's
passport was a "big issue".
"We will not interfere in the FIR registered (against
Shoaib in India), but there are always provisions under which
the passport can be released and a guarantee obtained from
him," Malik said.
The release of the passport will be a "good gesture to
the people of Pakistan, who are looking forward to the
wedding", he said.
"I hope Mr Chidambaram will consider my request
seriously," he added.
Police in the Indian city of Hyderabad seized Shoaib's
passport after Ayesha Siddiqui, who claimed to be married to
him, filed an FIR against the cricketer last week.
The matter was resolved when Shoaib granted her a
divorce last week. The move paved the way for Shoaib's
marriage this week to tennis star Sania Mirza. PTI RHL
