PM should assert India's stand on all its sovereign rights:BJP
New Delhi, Apr 12 (PTI) In the wake of Indian Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh's US visit, India's main opposition
party the BJP Monday said India should assert its stand on
"every sovereign right" be it the extradition of LeT operative
David Headley or the Nuclear Liability issue.
"BJP wants the Prime Minister to exert from his side
every Indian sovereign right that includes extradition of
Headley and the nuclear bill," Bharatiya janata Party (BJP)
spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.
She insisted that Headley, a Pakistani-American, should
face the law in India as he had violated this country's
sovereignty as he is one of the masterminds of the Mumbai
terror attacks.
On the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill, 2010,
Sitharaman said BJP's opposition to the proposed legislation
was still firm and would continue till its objections were
addressed.
Naming BJP's objections she said, "We are not happy with
the Rs 500 crore capping (of compensation). Moreover, the
Nuclear Liability Bill should leave no window of opportunity
for private players."
As of now, only government owned public sector units can
become nuclear operators. But BJP has expressed apprehensions
that the very purpose of bringing this legislation is to
facilitate entry of private operators, including US
multinationals, in future.
On the issue of compensation, BJP has sought more
clarity from the government.
"Leak (of nuclear material) itself is proof of liability
of the operator. We do not want the victim to run from pillar
to post," Sitharaman said. PTI
