7.1 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE HIT CHINA`S QINGHAI PROVINCE
BEIJING, April 14(Bernama)-- A 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the Yushu county
of northwest China's Qinghai Province at 7:49am Wednesday, resulting in at least
three dead and many others buried under the debris, the China Earthquake
administration reported.
The quake was followed by three aftershocks, including one of 6.3 magnitude
which occurred at 9:25am.
The epicentre was located at 33.1 degrees north and 96.7 degrees east, with
a depth of about 33km, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre.
The epicentre is about 30km away from the Jiegu township, and about 800km
from Xining, the provincial capital.
A level two earthquake contingency response was activated by the Earthquake
administration immediately after the quake.
As of 10:40am, a 62-man rescue team from Qinghai and another 40-man rescue
team from Tibet had been dispatched to the quake-hit region. Rescue teams from
Gansu and Shannxi provinces were on standby.
