Norwegian Minister confirms importance of UAE peaceful nuclear energy
Oslo - April 14, 2010 (WAM)- Deputy Petroleum and Energy Minister of Norway, Robin Kass has assured his country's desire to establish joint strategic projects with UAE in the field of renewable energy, development of oil and gas industry to achieve sustainable development.
In an interview in Oslo on the occasion of the visit of Crown Prince of Norway to UAE, he said that UAE has taken a very important step when it decided to generate electricity through nuclear power to provide clean and less costly sources to generate energy.
He added that this strategic decision will meet rapidly growing demand for energy in the UAE from peaceful nuclear energy while maintaining stocks of oil and gas for the next generation through exports to foreign markets.
Mr. Kass pointed to Norway's appreciation for the efforts of the Government of Abu Dhabi to build "Masdar" City and work to move forward in the projects of assembling, transporting and storing carbon dioxide from oil and gas fields and electric power plants to maintain a clean and natural environment.
The Norwegian Deputy Minister showing optimism from the visit of Crown Prince of Norway to UAE said that the visit seeks to establish a permanent partnership with UAE in oil and gas industry, renewable energy, maritime transport and environmental projects.
He affirmed that the Norwegian Government company "Statoil" is keen to set up joint ventures with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to develop oil and gas industry.
He said: "we have succeeded in oil and gas discoveries in the North Sea, relying on Norwegian expertise and technologies." Mr. Kass pointed out Norway's state of the art techniques for assembling, transporting and storing carbon dioxide, especially from power and water desalination stations. He also said that country uses its own techniques to inject oil wells with acid gas to increase their productivity and increase reserve in dry wells.
He said: "We have started implementing a project in Saudi Arabia to raise production capacity in some fields that were close to access and increased its stockpile oil." He explained that the oil cooperation between Norway, GCC countries and Algeria, is strategic and is moving towards expansion in light of Norway's willingness to employ its private technologies to increase oil production, carbon capture and liquefaction of gas in addition to the detection and production in both land and sea fields.
He denied any intentions of his country to join OPEC, saying "We are relevant to all parties, whether producers or consumers and strive to stabilise the market. We do not see that there is a need for membership." He also denied his country's intention to join the club of natural gas producers.
He said that Norwegian oil production reaches up to two million barrels per day in addition to producing about one hundred thousand tons of gas per year, noting that Norway is the second source of gas in Europe after Russia.
Mr. Kass mentioned that gas is the main source of energy in the future due to its cheap prices and being a clean source of energy.
The Norwegian Official welcomed UAE and GCC countries' oil and gas investments in Norway. He Estimated reserves of crude oil in Norway with about 81.3 billion barrels, while gas reserves reaches up to 6.5 billion cubic meters.
