Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed and Barack Obama confer during the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington D.C.
Washington D.C., April 14, 2010 (WAM) - His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces took part in the summit's morning plenary session, which was chaired by US President Barack Obama. The discussion focused on "National Measures to Secure Nuclear Materials/Combat Illicit Trafficking."
The UAE delegation made it clear during the summit's deliberations that it is vital to maintain necessary levels of vigilance in nuclear security through cooperative actions taken by all states, stressing the UAE's strong commitment to supporting and contributing to such efforts.
The delegation also pointed out the UAE's longstanding supports of a wide array of multilateral and bilateral nuclear security and related initiatives, including: The Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism, The Proliferation Security Initiative, and the proposed IAEA Nuclear Fuel Bank to which the UAE made a pledge of US$10 million.
The nuclear summit was aimed at drawing up a plan of action to secure loose nuclear materials, prevent nuclear material smuggling, and deter, detect and disrupt attempts at nuclear terrorism.
The UAE stressed that combating the threat of nuclear terrorism is high on its security agenda. The UAE officials voiced their support of reaching international consensus on adopting a work plan designed to prevent nuclear material and technology from falling in the hands of terrorist organisations.
The UAE's nuclear policy is based on foregoing domestic enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing. The UAE has also made a decision to rely solely on third-generation light-water reactors, which ensures the UAE nuclear industry is free of handling of highly enriched uranium and separated plutonium.
His Excellency Khaldoun Al Mubarak, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Government's Executive Affairs Authority, HE Mohammed Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Undersecretary of the Crown Prince's Court, Yousef Al Otaiba, the UAE Ambassador to Washington, and HE Hamad Al Kaabi, the UAE Ambassador to IAEA in Vienna.
