MSE 2010 OFF TO A FLYING START

DUBAI, April 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Services Exhibition (MSE) 2010
kicked off on a positive note with US$180 million worth of projects having been
secured on the first day of the event here Tuesday.
Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) Chief Executive
Officer Datuk Noharuddin Nordin said the projects encompassed construction of
biogas plants, solid waste management and education-related initiatives.
"These projects are located in Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Lebanon and Syria. The
parties involved were already negotiating long before the exhibition started.
They are here to conclude the deals," he told reporters on the sidelines of the
exhibition.
"We would like to congratulate the companies for doing a lot of homework
before coming here," he said, adding that potential projects worth US$1.6
billion had also been identified.
With the participation of 150 Malaysian service providers from eight
service clusters, the three-day MSE 2010 was opened Tuesday by International
Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
Elaborating on the potential projects for Malaysian companies, Noharuddin
said they included a US$500 million scheme to build 50,000 housing units in
Egypt.
Others were construction projects in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca, ICT
solutions for waste management in Ethiopia, Sudan and United Arab Emirates
(UAE), and energy generation projects in UAE and Saudi Arabia.
"Last year we identified RM8.5 billion (US$2.5 billion) worth of projects
and contracts. So we want to at least match the amount if not exceed it,"
Noharuddin said.
According to him, there were also opportunities for Malaysian firms to
build biogas plants in Uzbekistan and UAE.
The Malaysians have also identified further opportunities in areas like
water proofing, construction of hospitals, provision of digital system for
books and content, green energy consultancy, biomedical training, franchising,
housing development in India, product design and and design of automotive
parts.
Noharuddin said 762 business meetings had been scheduled during MSE 2010,
involving potential business partners from 20 countries.
They had been identified by Matrade officials stationed in the region.
