Medvedev meets with Argentina president.

BUENOS AIRES, April 15 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry
Medvedev, who arrived on Wednesday in Argentina, held talks with his
colleague Christina Fernandez de Kirchner that resulted in the adoption of
a package of documents. After Argentina he will fly to Brazil, where he
will take part on Friday in a summit of the BRIC group of countries
(Brazil, Russia, India and China).
The two leaders adopted a joint statement on cooperation as well as
signed a number of agreements on concrete directions of cooperation.
"The signing by the presidents of Russia and Argentina of a joint
statement on cooperation of the two countries based on mutual commitment
to principles of international law and the central role of the United
Nations in world affairs will be a major result of Medvedev's visit,"
presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko said earlier.
"A mutual interest in giving a new quality to Russian-Argentinean
relations opens prospects for closer coordination of our positions on the
international arena, joint international initiatives in the sphere of
disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, fight
against new challenges and threats to security, in particular
international terrorism, illegal drug trafficking and trans-national
organized crime," Prikhodko stressed.
"We also intend to confirm our political support for deliveries of
domestic energy equipment for local hydropower and thermal stations made
for already about 40 years," Prikhodko stressed. He said at the present
moment up to 20 percent of electricity in Argentina is produced on
equipment made in Russia or the former Soviet Union.
Prikhodko stressed that Russia showed interest in nuclear power
engineering cooperation. He said Russia intended to take part in several
tenders in this field.
According to Prikhodko, on the whole talks between the two leaders
would touch upon a wide range of cooperation fields. "The talks will focus
on the formation of a new world order, measures to overcome the financial
crisis and its negative effects, political and economic integration in
Latin America, further intensification of interaction between Russia and
MERCOSUR (South American Common Market), the Rio Group and UNASUR (Union
of South American Nations)," the presidential aide said.
"One of the pressing issues of bilateral agenda in trade and economic
spheres is diversification of trade between our countries," he noted.
"The main accent at the talks is to be made on a need to boost efforts
of both sides with an aim to reach concrete agreements and cooperation
projects in most important and promising spheres: participation in the
construction of nuclear power plants in Argentina, the joint use of the
GLONASS system, further supplies of Russian icebreakers and helicopters to
ensure Argentina's Antarctica expeditions," he added.
