BOMB, BELIEVED FROM WW2 FOUND AT KOTA KINABALU AIRPORT
KOTA KINABALU (Malaysia), April 17 (Bernama) -- The Kota Kinabalu
International Airport (KKIA) here was closed for two hours from 7.20am Saturday following the discovery of a World War II bomb in the compound.
KKIA operations manager Asbi Mohd Zaid said the closure resulted in the
delay of 19 inbound and outbound Malaysia Airlines (Mas) and AirAsia flights.
"The airport was closed until 9.20am and the situation is back to normal
now," he said when contacted.
Meanwhile, Kota Kinabalu district police chief ACP Ahmad Sofi Zakaria said
the bomb was found about 6am by a construction worker while digging a hole at
the end of the airport's landing strip.
Following which, police were alerted and the bomb disposal unit was called.
The bomb was then shifted to a safer ground and defused three hours later,
he added.
