MALAYSIAN PM'S WIFE RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND HARMONY AWARD
NEW YORK, April 17 (Bernama) -- Rosmah Mansor, wife of the
Malaysian Prime Minister, received the International Peace and Harmony Award from the United States (US) Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU), Friday night.
The award, in recognition of her extensive charitable work and to celebrate
the important links between Malaysia and the US, was presented to her by a
former US Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger at a dinner function held at
the St Regis Hotel here, which was attended by Prime Minister Najib
Tun Razak.
The BCIU, which was incepted in 1955 as a White House initiative, has been a
neutral, result-oriented partner, facilitating dialogue and alliances between
world businesses and political leaders.
Rosmah in receiving the award created by renowned sculptor Sergey
Eylanbekov, said she was delighted and honoured in receiving the award from an
organisation with a mission of promoting international understanding through
people-to-people contact.
"This award will serve to inspire and encourage not only myself but also
other people to continue working for important causes that benefit those in
need," she said.
Rosmah said she always believed that "all
of us are here, in this life, for a reason. In God's great wisdom, every
individual human being is created for a purpose.
"To my mind, it is important for us to always be attuned to the world we
live in, and to be aware of how lucky we are and in doing so strive to give to
those who are less fortunate," she said.
Rosmah, who is also the Patron for Children in Hope Foundation Malaysia,
said as a mother it always pained her when she watched news and read reports of
children suffering through no fault of their own, whether it was caused by war
and conflict, natural disasters, or actions of irresponsible parties.
"It is heart wrenching that the lives of children are interrupted and at
times are completely destroyed in just the blink of an eye.
"It is even more heart breaking when you realise that such children at times
receive little or no help at all, and are left to their own devices, emotionally
scarred for life, robbed of the limitless potential they could have had if only
they were given the right opportunities," she said.
Rosmah said it was always with this thought in mind that she took on
difficult challenges in carrying out humanitarian aid and charity, because she
knew that somewhere out there, there were children who needed held.
Rosmah has been active in many oragnisations and has been wearing different
hats including as the President of the Malaysian Girls Guide Association, Patron
for the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and Thalasemia Association
Malaysia, besides as the Chairma of the Working Committee for Permata Negara.
