MAS FLIGHTS TO UK, EUROPE SUNDAY MAY BE RESCHEDULED
KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is monitoring the situation of airport closures across the United Kingdom and Europe as a result of volcanic ash from Iceland and does not rule out the possibility that its flights tomorrow will also be affected.
MAS director of operations, Captain Azharuddin Osman said the national
airline is still monitoring the European airspace very closely and is in close
touch with the authorities involved.
"Based on the current weather conditions and reports, there is a possibility
that Sunday's flights will also be affected. Once the airports are re-opened,
we will normalise our schedules," he said in a statement here Saturday.
In the meantime, he said MAS was keeping in touch with customers who
provided their contact details to advise them of flight cancellations as well as
travel options.
Azharuddin said passengers affected by flight cancellations would be given
four options - full refund, exchange of tickets for future flights, re-booking
on the next available flight or make changes on their original destination to
fly into Rome instead.
"However, MAS will not make arrangements for land transfer to their final
destination. This is subject to seat availability.
"Passengers also can make travel date changes by April 22 and the travel
period can be deferred until May 31, and claim for refunds can be made by April
22," he said, adding that all transactions can be done at MAS' ticketing or
reservations offices.
For transit passengers, he said, they could claim for unutilised portions of
travel from MAS ticket offices upon returning to their original destination.
Azharuddin said at the same time, MAS was looking at the possibility of
mounting additional flights to ensure that customers are able to resume their
travel as soon as possible.
Passengers are urged to check flights status before going to the airport and
call MAS' call center 1300-88-3000 (within Malaysia) or 603-78433000 (outside
Malaysia) for help.
