UAE addresses aviation's environmental challenges in Ecuador
April 19, 2010 (WAM) - Capt. Aysha Al Hamili, UAE's Permanent Representative to the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) participated recently in a High-Level Conference on Safety and Environment 2010 hosted by the Ecuadorian Civil Aviation Authority in Galapagos Island, Ecuador.
As part of the ICAO delegation, Capt. Aysha Al Hamili held a number of meetings with high-ranking officials, including with Ecuador's Vice President, Mr. Lenin Moreno The conference, emphasised the vital role that air transport systems play in fostering economic development of ICAO member States, and provided a discussion platform for the exchange of information on implementation issues related matters arisen from ICAO's recently-held High-Level Safety Conference. Discussion topics also included issues such as the impact of new technologies and systems on safety and environment, the ICAO audit systems, ICAO Beyond COP 15, and aviation's environmental challenges.
Speaking on some of the challenges that the aviation sector faces in mitigating its environmental impact, Capt. Aysha Al Hamili said that "although at present international aviation emissions account for less than 2% of global CO2 emissions, in light of air transport's 5% average yearly growth, these emissions are expected to increase fourfold by 2050. The sector will not offset its projected growth solely with fuel efficiency improvements."
During her presentation Capt. Al Hamili underscored that the introduction of market-based measures, efficient air traffic management, implementation of new technology, and the deployment of alternative fuels in a sustainable way are some of the alternatives available to enhance aviation's environmental performance. "In fact, market-based measures are an excellent way to incentivise global environmental responsibility" Capt. Al Hamili added.
"As a significant player in the aviation industry, the UAE has undertaken a myriad of initiatives to mitigate its environmental impact. These include the establishment of Masdar City - a carbon neutral, zero waste city and IRENA - the International Renewable Energy Agency whose headquarters is in Abu Dhabi. In addition, the UAE has been actively implementing technological and operational measures to reduce fuel consumption, which in turns reduces CO2 emissions" Capt. Al Hamili commented.
In her concluding remarks Capt. Al Hamili cautioned that the forthcoming 37th session of the ICAO Assembly needs to demonstrate ICAO's undisputed leadership on climate change issues involving aviation in order to sustain its reputation and to show that the sector is capable of bridging the gap between developed and developing countries.
