Jet and Air India have been operating their long-haul
flights to the US and Canada from Sunday. The national carrier
plans to resume its flights to Frankfurt as soon as possible.
With the official figure of over 41,000 passengers,
including many foreigners, stranded in Delhi and Mumbai,
The Indian government has decided to extend their visas for a
fortnight.
It has also decided to grant special landing permit to
foreign carriers bringing extra flights to carry home the
stranded travellers.
Government had Monday advised passengers to postpone
their travel plans to European destinations unless it was for
emergency purpose.
Meanwhile, the Eurocontrol, which provides air
navigation services across the western continent, said
currently "air traffic control services are not being provided
to civil aircraft in the major part of European airspace".
This included Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland,
Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, northern Italy, Romania,
Slovenia, Switzerland, parts of Ukraine and the UK.
"In some of these areas the upper airspace has been
made available, depending on the observed and forecasted area
of possible ash contamination," the Eurocontrol's latest
update said, adding even though some flights operated in
southern and central Europe at certain points of time.
However, NATS, which provides same services on the
British sky, said "the situation regarding the volcanic
eruption in Iceland remains dynamic and the latest information
from the Met Office shows that the situation Tuesday will
continue to be variable.
While restrictions would remain in place over the UK
airspace below 20,000 feet, flights above the ash cloud will
be permitted, the latest NATS bulletin said.
Meanwhile, European aircraft manufacturer Airbus today
conducted test flights of the largest aircraft A-380 as well
as an A 340-600 to test the impact of the volcanic ash on its
flight systems.
The two planes conducted experimental flights after
taking off from Toulouse in France. PTI SMJ
