MAS TO CLEAR PASSENGER BACKLOG WITHIN A WEEK

SEPANG (Malaysia), April 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines (MAS) said Wednesday it hopes to clear within a week the passenger backlog built up following a grounding of flights due to the Iceland volcanic ash cloud by mounting as many extra flights as possible.

Malaysia Airlines managing director/chief executive officer Tengku Azmil
Zahruddin said some 16,000 passengers were affected because of the flight
restriction.

"It's a very chaotic time in Europe at the moment because there's a huge pent-up
demand, so there's going to be a lot of flights coming up but we will try as
much as possible to mount additional flights to make sure passengers stranded
are able to get back home.

"As we are able to secure the slots from airports to mount the flights, we will
inform passengers so that they can book the flights," he told reporters after
welcoming at the KL International Airport (KLIA) today MAS's first flight out of
Frankfurt following the lifting of flight restrictions in European
countries imposed on Thursday.

The flight was also the first by an Asean carrier out of Frankfurt since.

Tengku Azmil said MAS put on four extra flights today from Kuala Lumpur to
London, Rome and Sydney.

The airline had upgraded its flights to Rome from the Boeing 777 to the bigger
Boeing 747 to clear the stranded passengers, he said.

He also said that scheduled flights to London, Paris, Amsterdam and
Frankfurt would resume following the reopening of the air space in Europe.

Two flights are scheduled to leave Thursday for London, at 10.05am and 11.40pm,
one for Amsterdam, at 11.55pm, one for Paris, at 11.35pm and one for Frankfurt,
at 11.50pm, while, on Friday, two flights are scheduled to depart for London, at
noon and 10pm, one for Amsterdam, at noon, one for Paris, at noon and one for
Frankfurt, at 12.30pm, he said.
