TOP UN OFFICIAL ARRIVES IN YEMEN


SANA'A, April 23 (Saba)- The UNDP direct aid to Yemen reached US$50 million, a top UN official said upon her arrival on Friday in Yemen for a ten-day official visit.

Speaking to Saba, Ms. Amat Al-Alim Al-Soswa, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Assistant Administrator of United Nations Development Programme and Director of its Regional Bureau for Arab States, said that the United Nations will study several development programmes to support Yemen.

"The development programmes provided by the United Nations for Yemen are concerned with assisting the government to carry out its coming development plan. There are also programs related to the development and empowerment of women and young people, particularly addressing issues of poverty, and the flood disaster that occurred in the two provinces of Hadramout and Mahra as well as funding a number of healthy and social projects", said al-Soswa.

The UN official said that she would meet with government officials to discuss the continuation of cooperation between Yemen and the UN in development fields.

During her visit to her home, Al-Soswa would get acquainted with development projects implemented by the UN in Yemen.

She also would meet non-governmental organizations and other related parties to discuss several aspects of the UNDP’s support, including launching vital development programmes.
