WORLD BOOK DAY AT NATIONAL LIBRARY

KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 (Bernama) -- The National Library today organised
World Book and Copyright Day 2010 in a move to enhance the status of books as a
source of primary knowledge.

In an era where information communication and technology (ICT) is posing a
challenge, the library feels that the role of books in shaping world
civilisation remains unchanged, National Library director-general Raslin Abu
Bakar said.

As such, it was organising various activities to foster the reading habit in
the younger generation, he said at the event. Unesco has declared April 23 as
World Book and Copyright Day.

"The primary aim of the World Book and Copyright Day is to kindle in
children an interest for books and reading, besides expanding the scope to cover
all levels of society regardless of age, and to make reading a daily habit,"
Raslin said.

The event was launched by Deputy Information Communication and Culture
Minister Senator Heng Seai Kei, who read an extract of the text of speech by
Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak in the book "Menakhoda Zaman" (Helming
the Times), along with several students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri
Bintang Selatan (Government secondary school) at the compound of the library.
