India wants pragmatic framework for elimination of N-weapons
New Delhi, Apr 23 (PTI) India Friday said the danger of
nuclear terrorism has made early elimination of atomic weapons
a matter of even greater urgency and hoped that "pragmatic and
purposeful" frameworks would be worked out by the
international community in this direction.
External Affairs Minister S M Krishna told the Lower House
Lok Sabha that India had welcomed the recent initiative of
President Barack Obama to hold the Nuclear Security Summit to
discuss safety of atomic material across the world as concerns
in this regard were in consonance with India's interests.
"The focus on combating nuclear terrorism is consistent
with our concerns on terrorism and clandestine proliferation.
Strengthening nuclear security is also consistent with India's
interest in the safe and secure expansion of civil nuclear
energy," he said in a statement in Lok Sabha on Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh's visit last week to the US for Nuclear
Security Summit and Brazil for IBSA and BRIC Summits.
He laid the statement as he could not read it out because
of uproar created by opposition over Indain Premier League.
Krishna said the Prime Minister had underlined India's
concerns at the Nuclear Security Summit with regard to
clandestine proliferation and the danger of nuclear material
and technical know-how falling into the hands of non-state
actors.
The Prime Minister asked the world community to work
towards realisation of the vision of nuclear weapon free world
for which the Rajiv Gandhi Action Plan of 1988 remained the
most comprehensive and elaborate proposal in this regard, he
said.
"The danger of nuclear terrorism makes early elimination
of nuclear weapons a matter of even greater urgency," the
minister said.
Referring to the Nuclear Security Summit initiative, he
noted that the next meet would be held in South Korea in 2012
before which a preparatory meeting would be hosted by
Argentina later this year.
"We hope that the Nuclear Security Summit process would
help build pragmatic and purposeful frameworks for addressing
nuclear danger," he said. PTI AKK
