Sony to end floppy disk sales next March+

TOKYO, April 23 Kyodo -
Sony Corp. will stop sales of floppy disks next March as demand has plunged
amid the growing use of large-capacity memory media such as DVDs and USB flash
memory.
Sony, which was the first company to commercialize 3.5-inch floppy disks in
1981, shipped a peak of 47 million disks in Japan in fiscal 2000.
But shipments dived to 8.5 million disks in fiscal 2009 amid the use of
larger-capacity memory media.
Sony currently entrusts a Chinese company with the production of six types of
3.5-inch floppy disks that it sells in Japan.
Other major Japanese electronics makers, including Hitachi Maxell Ltd. and
Mitsubishi Chemical Corp., have already stopped producing and marketing floppy
disks.
