Tourism body to research preferences of visitors from Taiwan, S. Korea

TOKYO, July 8 (Kyodo) - The Japan Tourism Association is planning to give out 10,000 electronic money cards to visitors from South Korea and Taiwan from July 19 to analyze the popularity of tourist attractions based on spending patterns recorded on thecards.

Initially, 9,000 nanaco cards will be handed out through local travel agencies in Taiwan and South Korea to independent travelers. The cards have to be charged by the holder and can be used chiefly at Seven-Eleven convenience stores and Ito-Yokado supermarkets.

In September, the JTA will distribute 1,000 Suica cards each credited with 1,500 yen in electronic money. Suica cards can also be used for most rail, subway and bus services in the greater Tokyo area in addition to purchases at a limited number of retail outlets.

In the period through Sept. 30, the association will have dedicated data reading machines installed at 85 locations such as Tokyo Tower, Roppongi Hills and other major commercial facilities and restaurants. Card holders will be able to accrue ''points'' by having the card scanned at the machines. They will be eligible for lucky draws based on the number of points they store up.

The association aims to analyze the popularity of tourist attractions by nationality, gender and age and use the data to make the visitor experience more convenient, according to the association.

''We would like to use the data to be collected for planning tours and other purposes and hope to help revitalize the domestic tourism industry and the hotelier business,'' an official said.
