.Russia registers over 600,000 exposed to radiation after Chernobyl.

MOSCOW, April 26 (Itar-Tass) -- Over 600,000 Russians, who were
exposed to radiation impact as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster,
are put on the special register in the country, a source in the
information department of the Emergency Situations Ministry told Itar-Tass.
"For the examination of medical complications and the medical analysis
of the radiation-affected population the Russian state medical
radiation-monitoring register has been introduced since 1986 at the
Medical Radiological Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Medical
Sciences in Obninsk," the source said. "Currently register contains the
date about more than 600,000 Russian citizens, who were exposed to
radiation impact after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, including 186,000
nuclear liquidators, who live in all Russian regions," the source said.
"An important trend under two targeted programs is the development and
implementation of medical measures to radiation-affected people, including
the targeted specialized medical aid," the source said.
Specialized medical centers for the special medical aid to people
exposed to radiation impact were established and equipped in all federal
constituent territories. "The centers provide the high-tech specialized
medical aid to more than 3,000 people annually," the source said.
The development of the social sphere is also given close attention.
Over 880 kilometers of gas pipelines, about 170 kilometers of water supply
pipes, hospitals that can admit more than 1,500 people, outpatient clinics
intended for 2,300 consultations in one shift and other facilities have
been built at the radiation-polluted territories for the past 6-7 years.
"All this allows improving the life quality for more than 500,000 people,"
the Russian Emergency Ministry source said.
