ALBUKHARY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY READY FOR INAUGURAL INTAKE

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 (Bernama)-- The new RM350 million (US$102.94
million)) Albukhary International University (AIU) is targeting 500 students for
its first intake for the foundation studies programme in July.

"We expect 20 per cent of the intake to be from Malaysia while the rest will
come from overseas. In Malaysia there's considerable support from the government
and private sector for deserving students," Albukhary Foundation executive
vice-chairman Ismail Yusof said in a statement here Monday.

"The Albukhary International University is targeting bright students from
disadvantaged communities that live well below the poverty line, especially in
Asia and Africa," he added.

Since 2005, the foundation had provideed full scholarships to students who
were placed in public universities while the AIU was being constructed in Alor
Setar.

The medium of instruction for the university is English and for a start, the
university will award degrees in information technology, business studies and
social sciences.

The university is part of the Sharifah Rokiah Centre of Excellence, an
integrated complex of education, healthcare and commercial facilities managed by
the foundation.
