WITHDRAW CITIZENSHIP OF THOSE WHO INSULTED MALAY RULERS - SENATOR
KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian government has been urged
to withdraw the citizenship of those who insulted or opposed the Malay rulers.
Senator Jins Shamsuddin told Senate this was necessary as such
acts were against the country's law and federal constitution.
"In olden times, those who insulted and opposed the ruler are beheaded but
now we have laws, the courts and police," he said when debating the royal
address by King Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Monday.
He said House of Representatives and Senate members should respect the
address by King who was chosen and appointed by the Conference of Rulers.
Earlier, Senator Azian Osman said he was ashamed and angry with
opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim for questioning the address by King recently.
"We can study it but cannot question nor review the royal address," he said
when tabling the address by King.
He said this came about because King had praised Prime
Minister Najib Tun Razak as an examplary leader.
"We have to respect Tuanku's right to read out the text if he feels there is
no conflict. Worse still, the royal address had to be passed by block voting,"
he added.
Azian said of late, the Malay rulers had been reminding the people and
elected representative to act in accordance with the law and federal
constitution.
They include the Sultan of Kedah, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, the
Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah and the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan
Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
