PLANS FOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN MECCA

DUBAI, April 27 (Bernama) -- The Saudi Arabian authorities are planning to
build an international airport outside Mecca, Islam's holiest city.

The matter was agreed upon by the kingdom's Shoura Council, according to
Arab News daily.

It quoted council secretary-general Mohammed Al-Ghamdi as saying that it
had been proposed that the airport be located in an area that would allow both
Muslims and non-Muslims to travel to the region.

"A large number of haj and umrah (minor haj) pilgrims are expected to
benefit from the proposed facility," the newspaper said.

The decision elicited a positive response from readers based on comments
posted on-line.

One said: "It'll be a relief for those aged pilgrims arriving in Jeddah
who now have to take a bus ride to Mecca.

"Most of the Asian pilgrims who can't afford to take a taxi have to rely
on third-class buses and drivers who demand high fares from them. Thanks to the
Saudi government for this initiative."

Another commented that the proposed airport would not only benefit residents
and haj/umrah pilgrims but also boost business activity in the Mecca region.
