MIDA CORP TO FOCUS ON ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE AND HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT

KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Industrial Development
Authority (MIDA) needs to empower its management, make changes to organisational
structure and undertake human capital development as a step towards its
corporatisation.

In stating this, the Minister of International Trade and Industry Mustapa
Mohamed, also highlighted that MIDA needed a high calibre workforce and
professional expertise in areas such as investments.

"I had a meeeting with the MIDA management last Wednesday and they provided
input on the changes that had to be undertaken for the organisation," he told a
media conference in conjunction with the South East Asia Economic Ministers
Roadshow to the United States from May 3-8.

"There are two key factors to be emphasised, that is, an organisational
structure change and the development of human capital where we need the best
expertise.

"It includes recruiting from the private sector to strengthen MIDA," he
explained.

Mustapa said he would forward this proposal to Prime Minister Najib Razak
next month.

He said MIDA needs to change and continue playing an important role in
attracting investors to the country in line with the expectations of the New
Economic Model and Vision 2020.

However, he said MIDA's corporatisation will take time as it involved
changes to the MIDA Act, which had to be tabled in Parliament.

MIDA is the key government agency to encourage and streamline industrial
development in Malaysia.

It helps companies intending to invest in the manufacturing and related
services sectors by facilitating the implementation and operations of their
projects.

The corporatised MIDA will be renamed, the Malaysian Investment Development
Authority, while retaining its acronym.
