Bush looks forward to visiting Beijing for Olympics opening
TOYAKO, Japan, July 10 Kyodo - U.S. President George W. Bush said Wednesday he is looking forward to traveling to Beijing in August to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
He made the remark after emerging with Chinese President Hu Jintao from their meeting here, saying to Hu that he is ''looking forward to your hospitality.'' The U.S. leader also said he is ''really looking forward to watching the American team compete, particularly with the mighty Chinese team.''''I'm hoping to get tickets for the U.S.-Chinese basketball game,'' he said.
''If you could help me get a ticket, I'd appreciate it.''Hu replied that he will welcome the U.S. president's visit.
''I will welcome President Bush to Beijing to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games,'' he said. ''And I highly appreciated the fact that President Bush has on various occasions expressed his opposition to politicizing the Olympic Games.'' Bush has long been willing to attend the Aug. 8 opening ceremony of the Olympic Games as a celebration of sports. Following China's violent crackdown in Tibet earlier this year, some world leaders have threatened to boycott the openingceremony.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said earlier in the day that he will attend the opening, but British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and German ChancellorAngela Merkel will not be going.
''I don't need the Olympics to talk candidly with somebody who I've got goodrelations with,'' Bush said.
The White House said last week that Bush's attendance at the ceremony will bepart of his trip to South Korea, Thailand and China in August.
On Taiwan, which China regards as a renegade province, Hu expressed hope thatWashington will adhere to its one-China policy.
''I also briefed President Bush about the Chinese position on the Taiwan issue and informed President Bush about the current situation in the Taiwan Strait,'' he said. ''We hope that the U.S. side will continue to follow the one-China policy.'' Bush and Hu met on the fringes of the Group of Eight summit at the Lake Toya resort area in Hokkaido, northern Japan. Hu is among the more than a dozenleaders invited to dialogues with the G-8 heads.
