Time names Khalifa in its list of most 25 powerful leaders in the world
New York - May 2, 2010 (WAM)- UAE President HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been named among the 25 most powerful leaders in the world in 2010 by the Arabic edition of US Time magazine.
Sheikh Khalifa's ranking went up from 51 in the initial nomination announced early this year to 23 in the annual world list of the most influential leaders.
This is the second time in just one year an international leading publication to select the UAE President among the top world leaders. The Arabic edition of the US Newsweek magazine has named Sheikh Khalifa as personality of the year after the international edition placed him in the elite of the world's most 50 influential leaders for 2009.
The Time magazine said Sheikh Khalifa, as an honest custodian of the nation's wealth, is planning for the post-oil era to turn Abu Dhabi into a world centre for sustainable energy. The publication cited his financial support for local and international efforts to ride over the international financial crisis, a support that has mitigated the severity of the crisis.
What has turned the eyes of the world on Sheikh Khalifa, the magazine noted, is that he built a completely social, economic and cultural reality in the UAE, making it a proud country in the eyes of its citizens, neighbours and visitors.
Speaking about the challenges, the magazine said the UAE President has launched - within his political philosophy and belief in consultation - a holistic political reform programme to enhance participation of citizens in all domains of national action. That programme was translated into action through the holding of the first parliamentary elections with engagement of women.
The publication added that Sheikh Khalifa delivered his promise when he took the parliamentary experiment to the legislative and supervisory power, pushing the democratic experiment forward. And through the political empowerment programme, women have realised more qualitative gains, thus holding senior positions in all sectors of work.
The magazine said that Sheikh Khalifa's support for the environment and wildlife conservation, and regional and international studies on biodiversity and the environment has earned the UAE a prominent place worldwide in this respect.
Under the stewardship of Sheikh Khalifa, the UAE is emerging as a country of tolerance, human co-existence, fraternity, respect for other cultures and faiths. These values, the publication, said, have drawn the attention of the international media to the breathtaking progress in the UAE.
