43 FOREIGN STUDENTS CAUGHT FOR CRIME LAST YEAR, SENATE TOLD
KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Bernama) -- Seventeen criminal cases involving 43
foreign students were reported in the country last year, the Senate was
told Monday.
Deputy Home Minister Abu Seman Yusop said that between January
and March this year, there were 14 cases and involved 22 arrests.
"Considering the number of criminal cases last year, at 209,417, the number
of cases involving foreign students was only 0.008 per cent. As for this year,
the total number of criminal cases (up to March) was 45,805, and the cases
involving foreign students was 0.03 per cent," he said when replying to a
question from Senator Jins Shamsudin.
Jins had wanted to know the total number of criminal cases in the country
which involved foreign students and the action taken towards students involved
in crime.
Abu Seman said the police monitored foreign students at public and private
institutions of higher learning in the country, with the cooperation of the
Ministry of Higher Education and the Department of Immigration.
"The institutions of higher learning are asked to continually brief foreign
students on the country's laws and the social and cultural ethics they have to
adhere to," he said.
Replying to a supplementary question, also from Jins, on whether foreign
students involved in social ills and crime would be sent back to their
countries, Abu Seman said they would be dealt with according to the law.
"They will be sent back only after they have served their sentence," he
added.
