DEFENCE MINISTER DENIES MALAYSIA PROVIDES ARMS TO PALESTINIAN FIGHTERS

KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 (Bernama) -- Defence Minister Dr Ahmad
Zahid Hamidi Monday denied that Malaysia was supplying arms to Palestinian
fighters to placate them over his meeting with Isreali Defence Minister Ehud
Barak.

He said the governmenmt had not promised any arms aid to the Palestinians.

"The Malaysian government is committed to a free and independent Palestinian
nation without Israeli agression. Our government always calls for Israel to halt
agression".

"The government and people of Malaysia cannot accept the atrocity by the
Israeli forces against the Palestinians. Our government will always support to
develop a peaceful and sovereign Palestinian state," he said.

He said this in reply to a question by Senator Dr Syed Husin Ali at the
round-up debate for the Royal Address for his ministry in the Senate Monday.

Ahmad Zahid said his meeting with Ehud Barak was not planned at the 48th
International Aeronautic and Space Exhibition in Paris on June 16 last year.

"Many defence ministers attend the show," he said.
