THAI FM BRIEFS NAJIB ON BANGKOK PROTESTS

PUTRAJAYA, May 5 (Bernama) -- Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya Tuesday
briefed Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak on the anti-government
protests in Bangkok, said a spokesman of the Prime Minister's Office.

Kasit, who had arrived Tuesday for a two-day working visit, briefed Najib on
the latest situation in the Thai capital where red-shirted supporters of ousted
prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra continued to demand the dissolution of
parliament and elections within three months, he said.

"He (Kasit) informed (the prime minister) that the Thai government is still
a functioning one and had held its Cabinet meeting on Sunday," the spokesman
said.

Thailand has received world attention following the street demonstrations by
the red-shirted supporters of Thaksin who began their protests on March 12 and
called for the dissolution of parliament.

The spokesman said Kasit thanked the Malaysian government for having adopted
an impartial and non-interference stand with regard to the protests in Bangkok.

Accompanying Kasit to the meeting with Najib, which lasted about an hour,
were Thailand's ambassador to Malaysia Thana Duangratana and two counsellors
from the minister's office, Morakot Sriswasdi and Urasa Mongkol Navin.

Also present were acting Foreign Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Special
Advisor to the Prime Minister on Internal Relations Mohammad Kamal Yan
Yahaya and Foreign Ministry Deputy Secretary-General I Mohd Radzi Abdul
Rahman.
