10-YEAR-OLD DIES AS RAIN CONTINUES TO LASH YEMEN
DHAMAR, May 06 (Saba) –A ten-year-old was killed on Thursday swept away by floods in Dhamar province in central Yemen, as rain continued to lash many parts of Yemen, mainly the capital, Sana'a.
Another kid was seriously injured when they were swept by floods as well.
Meanwhile, the local council in the Secretariat Capital announced on Thursday during an emergency meeting an urgent tender for flood early warning system.
The announcement followed the casualties and damages caused by floods in the capital on Wednesday. Seven people were killed and others were injured and taken to hospital.
Cars were swept and others pulled by police after they broke down on streets in floods.
About 181 houses were affected, most of those randomly built in northern Sana'a. Wednesday's rain was the worst to hit the capital in a decade reaching a record level of 66 mm.
In the last few years, torrential rain lashed many parts of the republic killing and injuring people and causing damages to agricultural lands, houses and other properties.
The worst tragedy took place in 2008 when more than 90 people were killed by floods, most of whom died in the eastern provinces of Hadramout and Mahra.
Over 2000 houses were destroyed then and a lot of agricultural lands were submerged.
Losses were estimated at about $ 1 billion. Yemen then received support from regional and world countries to rebuild the damaged areas and help the affected people.
