CHIDAMBARAM 3LST

Chidambaram said still a gap of 500 IPS officers would
remain, which would be made up by departmental competitive
exams from the state services and paramilitary forces.
He regretted that for intelligence agencies like Research
and Analysis Wing (RAW), 250 IPS officers are required. "I am
begging Chief Ministers but no IPS officers are forthcoming."
On the issue of seperate statehood for Telangana, the Home
Minister said it is an emotional issue and the solution lies
not in Delhi but in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh where
eight parties must show political wisdom.
He hoped that the BJP would stop boycott of the Srikrishna
Committee looking into the Telangana issue.
He allayed opposition concerns that by merely declaring
their nationality, Bangladeshis would be able to get Indian
citizenship.
"It is quite possible many of them would declare
themselves Indian nationals but that does not confer on them
the right to nationality," he said.
He said under the ongoing Census the enumerators are not
investigators. Once the population register is complete, a
separate citizenship register would be done after thorough
investigations.
On a suggestion from Mani Shankar Aiyar (Nominated), that
directives be given to states for implementation of
development schemes under a provision of the Constitution,
Chidambaram said he would consult the Prime Minister on
setting up an appropriate mechanism in which various
development schemes could be implemented. PTI NAM
